WARNING: The law normally requires people who offer financial products to give information to investors before they invest. This requires those offering financial products to have disclosed information that is important for investors to make an informed decision. The usual rules do not apply to this offer if you are a person who comes within Schedule1, clause 3(2)(a)-(c) or 3(3)(a)-(b)(ii) (inclusive) of the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013. This includes where the amount invested upfront by the investor (plus any other investments the Investor has already made in the financial products) is $750,000 or more.

If you fall within Schedule 1, clause 3 of the FMCA as a result of this exclusion, you may not receive a complete and balanced set of information. You will also have fewer other legal protections for this investment. Investments of this kind are not suitable for retail investors. Ask questions, read all documents carefully, and seek independent financial advice before committing yourself.

Following a very positive response from our members at Pitch night, Enterprise Angels is pleased to extend to the wider investor community an offer to invest in Kara Technologies

Background:

Imagine a world where language barriers are a thing of the past, where everyone, regardless of their hearing abilities, can access information seamlessly. This is the world that Kara Technologies is striving to create.

In the United States, American Sign Language (ASL) is the second most sought-after language for translation, trailing only Spanish. The demand for ASL translation is growing, driven by businesses and organizations’ desire to cater to the deaf community and the amplifying effect of the Disabilities Act. However, the high cost of ASL translation, which currently necessitates the physical presence of a translator, is a significant hurdle.

Enter Kara Technologies, the pioneer in creating the world’s first hyper-realistic sign language avatars powered by artificial intelligence. These digital humans can provide real-time translation of content and communication from customer-facing service providers into sign language, revolutionizing accessibility for the deaf community.

The deaf community represents a portion of customers whose requirements are not being met, and a workforce that is underutilised. With written English as their second language, closed captions and subtitles are suboptimal for the deaf community, reducing the quality of services provided. Kara Technologies aims to bridge this communication gap and has emerged as the market leader, optimizing the speed of translation, product scalability to different geographic variations of sign language, and the natural appearance of the avatar movements.

The avatars’ high fidelity faces and emotional expressions enable them to be fully expressive and engaging (an essential aspect of sign language communication) – easily connecting with the audience and providing accurate translation. They can appear at the bottom of any screen or on any device, interpreting any content into sign language.

The Team:

  • Led by Dr. Arash Tayebi (CEO, co-founder and director with a PhD in Electrical Engineering), includes experts in various fields, from computer systems to sign language
  • Dr Sahar Izadi (COO and co-founder) Science PhD, operations guru
  • Farmehr Farhour (CTO and co-founder) BE (Hons) Computer Systems
  • Ken Erskine (CMO and co-founder) senior marketing and sales background, NZ startup ecosystem leader and investor
  • Grace Covey (Sign language expert/Comms Manager) VP of Auckland Deaf Society, BA Communications, Profoundly Deaf/Native NZSL
  • Helen Robinson (Chair) ex-Microsoft NZ
  • Jamie Newth (Director) CEO Soul Capital and Senior Lecturer UoA

Traction:

Kara Technologies has already generated $1.1m in revenue from pilot projects with major, primarily US based customers and have exceeded their full-year budget target in 2023 by 100%.

The Company is poised for further growth, with a sales channel partner agreement with a leading firm in the mass notifications of critical event management industry expected in Q2 2024. There is strong potential for Amazon Web Services (AWS) acting as a global sales channel – AWS represents 34% of global market share in cloud-based services. Multiple, major (>$100B market cap) US listed companies have requested early access, and a patent has been recently granted in Australia and filed in the US.

The offer:

  • Raising $3-6m - Funds will be used to continue to build out the vocabulary database, complete the final modules of the translation platform, and increase sales/marketing staffing in the US
  • Led by Soul Capital
