The Silver Economy: Opportunities in Ageing Populations

Ageing Populations Are Creating New Investment Opportunities

The Silver Economy refers to the goods, services, and industries catering to people aged fifty and over. Increasing life expectancy and advances in healthcare mean that adults are living longer, remaining active, and often retaining wealth.

Countries such as Japan, Germany, Italy, and Australia are at the forefront of this transition, with an ageing demographic reshaping everything from healthcare to financial markets. By 2050, nearly one in four Australians will be aged 65 or over - a trend mirrored across the developed world.

For investors, this translates into predictable growth sectors like healthcare, real estate, technology, and financial services.

New Zealand’s Demographic Turning Point

In New Zealand, the Reserve Bank has highlighted ageing demographics as a structural shift that will influence the financial system for decades to come. In a recent Financial Stability Report, Director of Financial System Assessment Kerry Watt noted:

“An ageing population is likely to influence savings, borrowing and investment behaviour. This in turn will affect interest rates, asset prices and the demand for financial products. The overall impacts may be complex and vary over time.”

Key points from the RBNZ’s analysis include:

  • Savings patterns will shift – overall savings are expected to rise in the near term, before declining as retirees draw down their wealth.

  • Interest rates and asset prices may be affected – greater saving could put downward pressure on interest rates while supporting higher valuations for equities and housing.

  • Changing demand for financial products – mortgages may decline in importance, while health insurance demand grows and life insurance weakens.

  • Shifts in banking and insurance – banks may see higher deposit funding but lower housing loan demand, leading to new lending models and product innovation.

  • Policy implications – ageing demographics will affect the transmission of monetary policy and exert fiscal pressures as healthcare and superannuation costs rise.

For investors, this reinforces that the Silver Economy is not an abstract theme - it is already reshaping financial markets and institutions in New Zealand and the time to engage is now.  For businesses poised for growth and looking to scale in these sectors, accessing investors is critical.

Syndex offers a unique advantage by connecting companies raising capital with wholesale and sophisticated investors. As demographics change, investment opportunities will increasingly converge with the needs of the Silver Economy, enabling expansion and driving economic transformation.
