Tāmata Hauhā (Tāmata) is transitioning uneconomic, largely Māori land to native bush. Its mission is to create economic prosperity and well-being for hapū, utilising the New Zealand Emission Trading Scheme as a financial, social development and environmental enabler. Together with its partners, Tāmata gains long-term access to underutilised land, which is then afforested under New Zealand's emission trading scheme. Under the scheme, newly planted forests generate carbon credits called New Zealand Units (NZUs) that can be sold on a transparent and liquid market. Thus, Tāmata provides that crucial missing financing, improving the value of the land, and sharing in the returns.
Tāmata has registered over 35 planting projects across 30 locations, planting approx. 4 million trees across ~4,000 ha, with a further ~2,500 ha under management; from the far north to the Catlins, and on the Chatham Islands. Tāmata is investing into the land, people and future prosperity.
Recent updates from Tāmata include:
- The leading planter of carbon forestry in New Zealand in 2025 (~850 ha); and looking to plant ~2,500 ha in 2026.
- Assessed over 200,000 ha and have potential planting sites of ~15,000 ha in next 3 years. Establishing a full-time presence on the Chatham Islands to manage the demand arising, a unique opportunity that encapsulates the Company’s vision of restoring land and empowering communities through permanent forestry.
- Helped secure an exemption for Māori land under the Government’s policy changes intended to limit how much farmland is converted to forestry and registered in the ETS. This positions Tāmata Hauhā well to take advantage of the Government’s revised approach.
- Tāmata Hauhā is approved under the new Active Investor Plus (AIP) visa scheme.
- Advancing discussion with several large, specialist global funds to secure debt and/or project financing for the 2026 planting season. This will enable Tāmata to expand planting capacity and thereby maximise value without diluting shareholders.
